Online Teen Scavenger Hunt

The On-Line Teen Scavenger Hunt can be completed by students on their own, with a friend or with a parent.

Purpose:

For high school-age students to gather information and identify resources related to teen pregnancy prevention using the internet.

Materials:

  1. Scavenger Hunt Worksheet
  2. Scavenger Hunt Answer Sheet

Procedure:

  1. Introduce the Activity
    Explain to students that they will be going on a scavenger hunt — not a traditional one but an on-line scavenger hunt. You will provide web site addresses and some questions. Their job is to search the web sites to find and document answers to the questions as well as participate in an on-line activity. Let students know where they can have free internet access. Tell them when they need to have the scavenger hunt completed.

  2. Review the Scavenger Hunt Worksheet
    Pass out the Scavenger Hunt Worksheet and give students a chance to review it. Answer any questions they may have. Let them know that the activity will take 30 to 90 minutes to complete or longer if they choose to get more involved. Tell students that they may not be able to complete some participatory activities in one sitting, so if time is limited, they'll need to choose their participatory activities carefully.

  3. Students Complete the Scavenger Hunt

  4. Debrief the Activity
    Once students have completed the scavenger hunt, lead a group discussion using the following steps:

    • Have students share answers to questions one through three. Correct misinformation as necessary using information from the Scavenger Hunt Answer Sheet.

    • Ask students if any of this information was surprising to them. Have them explain.

    • Ask students what else they would have liked to have learned from the sites.

    • Ask students if they found any additional helpful sites.

    • Give students a chance to share anything else they learned by completing the activity.

    • In closing, summarize for the students what they said they learned from the activity.
