Sample Focus Group Protocol Wait for Sex Program

Opening/Icebreaker

  1. Greeting. Introduce self/role.
  2. Youth introduce themselves.
  3. "Tell me what sort of activities that you might participate in at (name of organization) (or ask them something else to get them talking about themselves)."
  4. Explain what a focus group is and the purpose of this focus group.
  5. Tell group that the session will be audiotaped and explain why.

Focus Group Questions

  1. What things have you liked most about the "Wait for Sex" program? Why? [Probe: favorite activities; favorite lessons]
  2. What do you think about how the program leaders run the program? — like the amount of time for them to talk about the lessons; the amount of time for activities; the type of field trips; the surveys, etc.
  3. What were the main things you learned from the program?
  4. Future goals:
    1. Do you think this program can help kids your age set goals for their future, or have more ideas about what they can do in the future? Why or why not? [Probe: If not, then what can the program do to help kids in this area, if anything?]
    2. Did the program help you to set goals for your future, or have more ideas about what you can do in the future? Why or why not?
  1. Delaying sex:
    1. Do you think that this program can help kids your age to learn the ways to delay having sex? Do you think the program can help kids want to delay sex? Why or why not? [Probe: If not, then what can the program do to help kids in the area, if anything]
    2. Did the program help you learn ways to delay having sex? Did it make you want to delay having sex? Why or why not?
  1. Talking to parents:
    1. Do you think this program can help kids your age talk to their parents more about sex? Why or why not? [Probe: If not, then what can the program do to help kids in this area, if anything?]
    2. Do you think that this program helped you talk to your parents more about sex? Why or why not?
  1. What are some of the things that you did not like about the program? Why or why not? [Probe: What can the program leaders do to fix the things youth don't like?]
  2. Is there anything else that you can tell me about your experience with the "Wait for Sex" Program? [Probe: Are there any things you can share, either good or bad, that could help us make the program better?]
